Urban Homesteading Workshop for Families
Sunday, Sept. 18, 12:30- 3:30
Unitarian Universalist Church, Eugene
477 East 40th Ave (at Donald St)

This hands-on workshop will introduce families to a new and exciting way of life that builds self-sufficiency and family bonds in an Earth-friendly way.  Kids, with their parents, will churn applesauce, see an egg-laying chicken,
learn how to make jam, grind spices and grain, make bread, prepare a family food
plan, and lots more! 

Mary Wood, who teaches environmental law at the University of Oregon, will lead this workshop together with her three children–Sage, age
13; Cam, age 11; and Nick, age 5.  Token gifts and handouts will be provided.

The workshop will cover the following topics: 

  • Establishing a year-round garden
  • Raising chickens and other micro-livestock
  • Storing a food supply in root silos
  • Canning fruits and tomatoes
  • Drying and freezing fruits and vegetables
  • Cooking from scratch (featuring
    bread and soup)
  • Eliminating waste and packaging
  • Transporting the family
    by bike and bus
  • Using your garage as a grocery store (dry goods and
    storage)
  • Foraging for food
  • Drying spices
  • Making yogurt.

This event is free-of-charge and open to kids and adults of all ages.  Come learn about a fulfilling, fun lifestyle that
builds family, creates community, teaches values, promotes food security,

Please join us for a garden work party this Thursday (July 15) from 10am until we complete our tasks. We will be doing regular garden maintenance, as well as planting beans and possibly sunflowers (we welcome donations of both). We also hope to plant a hedge (!) along 30th on Thursday.

If you cannot make it to the morning event, we could use your help with the outdoor classroom project. EWEB volunteers will be at Camas Ridge on Wednesday, July 14, and Thursday, July 15, evenings picking up the asphalt and concrete waste generated as part of the bike shelter and outdoor classroom construction. We need Camas Ridge volunteers to lend a hand with sweeping and shoveling the debris after the backhoe has picked up the big pieces. The work parties will start at 5:30 and run until 7 or 7:30. Please stop by if you can and bring gloves, push brooms and shovels, if you have them. Thanks!!

Outdoor classroom & Butterfly Garden construction begins!!! Please come
Sunday afternoon, June 6, 1:00-3:00 to help remove asphalt for the new
garden and classroom. Bring work gloves, pry bars, sledge hammers,
rakes–anything you can to help us move asphalt and stone from the new
garden area.

Set aside Sunday, May 16th for a day of wildflowers, music, food, crafts, and microscopes! You don’t have to be a plant expert to love our upcoming Wildflower Festival. The festival is loaded with fun things to do for everyone in the family. As many as three to four hundred species of wildflowers will be on display, from Anemones to Vancouveria!
Parking is free on festival day. Suggested donation $5 per person, children under 12 free. Please leave your dogs at home!
