Hummingbird Wholesale  and Slow Food Eugene Invite You To The Spring Bean Cleaning Spree–April 2nd

It’s your turn to help build our local food system and enjoy yourself doing it.  There’s a whole hill o’ beans and they need to be sorted! Hummingbird Wholesale is helping out a local farmer who delivered some beans that were not in salable condition.  Slow Food Eugene is helping sort and clean those beans so they can be put up for sale.  This is one of those projects that require a community to help out in the beginning stages of a new agricultural product in the Willamette Valley.    The task is easy, but hugely important in making locally grown legumes a  reality in our area. So come on out after your trip to the Farmers  Market and enjoy the good  company that getting something done together creates.   We need able  hands to commit to at least two hours of bean cleaning, during the rest  of the time you are welcome to munch on some food and make some new  friends. We are also planning a few distractions to mix up the bean  cleaning and keep things rolling.   Kids are welcome at this  event, but please do keep in mind that we have a mission to get these  beans sorted, so it will be a working good time. Of course, this is a Slow Food event, so there will be some tasty things to keep us fueled while we do our sorting.  DATE:  Saturday, April 2, 2011    TIME:  2-5 pm  PLACE:  First United Methodist Church, 1376 Olive Street, Eugene COST:  FREE RSVP: We need to know ahead of time if you will be able to join us! Join friends and neighbors at the Fairmount Neighborhood Sunday Farmers Market, in the Sun Automotive parking lot, on the southeast corner of Agate and 19th Ave. The market starts on Sunday, July 18, from 10 am to 3 pm.

The internationally acclaimed documentary “The Future of Food” will be featured at a public screening at the Eugene Public Library, July 21 6pm-8:30pm.

Mark your calendars! If all goes according to plans, Eugene City Bakery and friends will be starting a farmers market on the southeast corner of Agate and 19th Ave (Fairmount neighborhood). First United Methodist Church at 13^th and Olive.

Deepen your connection to 15 local farmers at the restructured 11th annual That’s My Farmer event. Learn directly from the farmers about topics as diverse as preserving farm land; growing, cooking, and preserving vegetables and fruits; all-about-chickens; making sauerkraut; building soil or a backyard greenhouse; working with draft horses.

Join 15 local faith communities, the farmers and your neighbors for music, unique raffle prizes, and opportunities to buy a CSA share or Farmer Bucks.

Tom Bettman, OSU Extension Master Gardener, will lead a workshop on urban gardening.  Donation suggested: $5 per person or $10 per family. All proceed go to the low-income fund.

There will be a seed saving workshop in the Amazon Community Center 6:45pm-8:45pm on Monday, February 15th.

The Seed Ambassadors Project, a local seed saving organization, will be sharing basic information on seed saving techniques, including garden planning for seed saving.  The event will include an informal seed swap also, so bring your own seeds if you have them!
